Haynes tries to reconcile his violent past with the compassionate side of himself he uncovers while on the road with Phillip. Costner manages to simultaneoulsy portray Haynes as a dangerous criminal and a caring father figure to his young captor. I think it's Costner's performance of his career, as Butch Haynes, an escaped convict who takes hostage a young boy, Phillip, while on the run from a U.S. So it should be no surprise that this film is another winner. From Unforgiven to Million Dollar Baby, the man has a gift for telling a good story on the screen.

The humorous back and forth between Robin and Azeem, the battle in Sherwood Forrest, the rescue of Loxley's men at their hanging, the evil Mortianna living in the depths of the castle, prophecizing the Sherriff's reign with cracked eggs in a bowl, and an early depiction of an already corrupt Church of England.

There's a lot about this movie that I enjoy. Robin, along with his companion Azeem (Morgan Freeman) and Little John, steal from the rich to give to the poor, all while wooing Maid Marian. Also add the twist of who really is behind the plot to assassinate her and it really becomes interesting.Ĭostner plays the infamous Robin of Loxley, outlaw of England out to end the corruption and cruelty the Sherriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman) has perpetrated in the absence of King Richard (Connery), who is off fighting in the Crusades. What I find compelling about the film is that Rachel is about as likeable as poison ivy, but when we see her through Farmer's eyes, we begin to care as he does and see beyond the facade of fame to the true person she is. It is said that Costner asked that the filming be delayed to accomodate Houston's tour schedule because he could not see anyone else in the role of Rachel.
The film did not enjoy the phenomenal success the soundtrack did, but it did launch Houston's career as an actress. He is enlisted to protect singer/actress Rachel Marron (Houston) as her rising star makes her the target of a lunatic stalker. Costner plays former Secret Service agent turned personal bodyguard Frank Farmer. Interesting side note: the upcoming movie Gangster Squad seems to be the same story with Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) in the place of Capone and the backdrop being Los Angeles.Ĭinematically the film is no masterpiece, but what it lacks in artistry it makes up for in heart. Also the final showdown between Ness and Frank Nitti (Billy Drago) is just as entertaining as it is satisfying. The amount of suspense created by Costner's POV, bouncing back and forth from the clock, the woman with the stroller, and the doors to the train station, is nerve wracking. The film which chronicles Federal agent Eliot Ness (Costner) as he assembles a team to take down Chicago's most notorious gangster, Al Capone (DeNiro). Not necessarily for their artistic merit, but more for their entertainment value. The following are all films that I own and enjoy watching from time to time. Also as I am praising his talent as an actor, none of his directorial efforts are included, not even his Westerns (I'll take Tombstone over Wyatt Earp any day). I should mention now that Dances with Wolves does not make my top 5 and since I showed Field of Dreams love my last blog, I have omitted it this time around.
